They seek him here,
they seek him there,
those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven or is he in hell?
That damned elusive Pimpernel.”
By Sir Percy Blakely
The story is from a novel written by Hungarian born Baroness Emma Orczy, and was published in London in 1705. This tale is about an English dandy called Sir Percy Blakely who appeared to be a cowardly dandy and quite an irritating character to some people who thought him less of than a man. Sir Percy was married to a French actress Marguerite St Just and he believed that she had betrayed him and although he loved her he kept that love hidden and showed her no love. Marguerite however, loved Percy very deeply.
Sir Percy takes on another identity to help save French aristocrats from the guillotine during the French revolution, the other identity is The Scarlet Pimpernel. It’s a story of goodie versus baddie and I won’t spoil anymore of the movie by telling the story here, but the story is believable, fun and has everything there to keep you glued to the screen.
This movie has to be one of my all time favourites. There have been several actors who have played the leading role but the one I like most is Anthony Andrews.
this is my favourite version also.
